Food blogging is the ultimate hobby I could indulge in for hours on end. A captivating hobby turned into a full-time passion now, which fills me with excitement and self-worth every single day. Food blogging gives me endless entertainment, raises curiosity, creates memories and helps connect with wonderful online friends to grow together.
A simple hobby which started with the percept of organizing recipes through a food blog has gradually metamorphosed into a memoir over the years. If some recipes help reconnect with my roots then the other recipes are woven around my personal experiences reflecting the cultural diversities I live in.
The omnipresent Idly from South India was a delicacy in mom’s place before my marriage. Many Sunday lunches were reserved for steamy hot puffy Idly (steamed rice-lentil cakes) dunked into spicy Sambhar (lentil curry).
The equation changed after my marriage to KK from South India in 1996. The humble Idly which is often taken for granted in Chennai is no longer considered a specialty food at my home.
Soaking a set proportion of rice-lentil, grinding the batter, fermenting it overnight and storing the fermented batter in refrigerator has become a way of life now.

And before I could think of anything, I was already prop shopping for this premium Australian brand – Longleaf Tea Vodka with Kunal Daswani, a very experienced and eminent Photographer in Chennai.
Every time a photo-shoot assignment lands on my lap I am like a happy kid, running around, shopping, planning and stacking props enthusiastically for the shoot.
I use the exact ingredients, follow her instructions precisely, but my recipes never turn out to be as good as hers. No, not even the simplest ‘Dahi wale Aloo’, tastes the same.
“I dislike short-cuts in cooking. Ready-to-use spices in sachets or snapping those large plastic bags of flour are a big no-no in my kitchen.”. replied mom over phone, when I put forward my query to her.
“Well, you have loads of time to your discretion to make your own spices and grind flour, mom. I have to make-do with these short-cuts, until I get relieved from my family commitments.”. I replied and pacified my ego.

My house resembles a NASA workstation during morning hours on weekdays. We all get up quite early and continue doing our routine chores, just as any robot will do. Though there is hustle & bustle of activities going around all over the house, a pin drop silence is always maintained, lest we forget to execute any task.
I get up at 5.30 am, brush teeth, rush out to get milk, go for a small morning walk, cook and pack the lunch & breakfast for hubby, all by 6.30 am.
There is no better way to start a day than with a hearty breakfast with your family!

“But Tatha, what about those who are left hander, how can you ask them to perform rituals with right hand?” I heard my son arguing with his grandfather who insisted that he use right hand to offer flowers during a Puja at home.
After the Puja rituals were over their grandmother took a little bit of all the food offered to God and went backdoor. She then placed the food on boundary wall and started calling the crows..Caa..Caa…
“Why do you always offer food to crows granny, why not a sparrow or a parrot?” questioned my daughter.
“Tatha, I read it somewhere that tradition is an explanation for acting without thinking, is it so?” And the argument between grandparent and grandchildren continued.
A delicious meal is great, but a dessert is even better. A handful of fresh fruits, few biscuits, a little yogurt or cottage cheese and you are in for a refreshing and healthy treat everyday. Dessert recipes that are easy on the stomach are preferred anytime in my home to heavy & creamy ones. Nothing is more rewarding than to see my children appreciating & preferring these home made healthy desserts over store bought ice creams.
These two desserts are now a regular feature on our dinner table, just that the fruits and the biscuit/cornflakes base keep changing to bring in more variation in the recipes. Cottage cheese and yogurt give that feathery touch and extra freshness to the recipes.

To me the best thing about vacation is brainstorming the places to visit and then making a tentative plan for the entire trip. Online reviews and Google comes to rescue for searching a comfortable hotel/resort, book safaris in advance and design the itinerary all by myself.
Years of traveling has made me a planner and I often look out for off beat destinations in India to avoid unruly crowd, commercialization of tourist places and to experience the thrill of meeting new challenges all the way. Traveling together to some known and some unknown destinations has made the nature lover, the adventure enthusiast and the history buff in my family come out in open. We now appreciate the ruins of history and pristine beauty of mountains in the same breath.

A trip to hometown is more than just yearly rituals to me. It’s the time to connect with family & friends, explore some new and some old places that remain unchanged. Vacation is ‘my time’ when I do things at my own pace, follow my passion, and get in some real life. It is the time when blog posts can wait and there is no pressure to sign in to check mails and social media interactions. I completely enjoy every moment of the laid back life and mom’s yummy food.
Networking takes a back seat and I live in the real world. The day begins with an early morning walk alongside lake Fateh Sagar, reading regional New paper ‘Rajasthan Patrika’ and gorging home cooked simple yet authentic Rajasthani breakfast.

Most of the days I prefer dishes which need less time to cook, have fewer ingredients and still retain the freshness & nutrient quotient intact. These simple recipes are a perfect antidote for those busy days when you are hard pressed for time and need something healthy and filling which can be thrown in just minutes.
This warm Chickpea and Veggie Salad falls in the same category. I defer to call this recipe just a simple salad, with Olive oil, mixed veggies, bread croutons, herbs, spices and protein packed chickpeas, this recipe makes a complete meal in itself. I could happily start and end my breakfast, lunch and dinner with a bowl of this chickpea and veggie salad.
