Recipes | 6 Easy and Healthy Festive Snacks Aka Sundal Recipes – Life is What You Celebrate

Look at this pretty Idol of Sarawati with Veena, this one is more than 100 years old, it was passed on to me by my mother. And this white Shiva Idol….a friend of your Tatha’s father (great-grandfather) brought it  from Sri Lanka about 70 years ago.” She wipes the idol gently and asks my son to place it on the ladder specially created for Navaratri festival.

For a change there is a silence at home for long, as the children are sitting patiently next to their grandmother, waiting eagerly for her to open that heavy iron trunk which is rusted beyond repair. I could see the amusement written all over their faces. The trunk which opens up with a creaky noise is like a Pandora box for them with small bundles of memories, moments and untold stories.

Her face lightens up each time she unfolds the fragile age-old clay dolls wrapped in small muslin clothes. I wonder how she never gets bored of narrating the (same) history of each Idol to my children, year after year… 🙂

And I am sure when they hold some of these Idols which belong to their fore fathers, it gives them a feeling of belonging and reminds them from where they came from.

Recipe | Easy & Healthy Snacks – Fenugreek Muthia and A Fulfilling Vacation

Travel wasn’t fun if you didn’t get to see or do what you wanted.” Though we have traveled extensively to many beaches of South India, there still are a few things left in my wish-list. Sit on a beach and gaze a ship leave the shore till it meets horizon, observe a day in the life of fishermen and wander in marshy Mangrove forest are a few of them. Our recent trip to a few places in South India last weekend made it happen.

Most of our trips are decided on the spur of the moment. But these unplanned vacations have a special magic in it such that the enthusiasm & suspense remains till the end and our recent trip was no exception. More about the same here.

Each night we would sleep with dreamy eyes to see some other horizon the next day. Waking up at 4.30 am each day, sipping tea overlooking the sea, seeing busy fishermen on the job, walking in the woods and watching the world go by…ahh, the feeling is yet to sink in…am still mesmerized.

Recipes | Two Healthy Snacks with Fresh Corn & Soya Chunks – Just Another Day in Paradise

It was just another day in paradise…spent an evening on beach, had fun and listened to each drop of water tell a story of life! The pleasing sight of vendors selling colorful snacks, lovey-dovey pair lost in their world, elderly couple walking hand in hand and children from the most affluent to common families playing together on the beach…the more I see, the less I know about life.

A trip to beach is always welcoming both to the parents and the children. My kids and hubby love to play in water, make sand castles while I travel to and fro with the waves in my dreamland. Hubby keeps a watch on both children & me, interrupting frequently with “Take care of our shoes, camera, bag …don’t get lost in your own world”.

Ahaa.. finally its here – the Summer Holidays, time we all look forward to year after year! Trip to home town, loads of  ‘me time’ to relax and also to complete all the pending tasks I have been procrastinating the whole year wearing the shield of ‘no time’ 😉

My euphoria is but short lived, the very next day of the holiday and the mom is busier than ever. Library, cricket coaching, dance classes, piano lessons…and repeat. Well, as a good mother I also need to keep my children engaged and make their holiday more productive. Till then..’me time’ can wait.

Recipe & Food Styling | Tofu Pudding or Sattvik Kheer

The power to make food look mouth-watering on print and media is so inspiring and rewarding. As a food lover I feel fortunate to have worked with some of the best photographers and production houses in Chennai.

Last month was crazy as my shooting schedule went haywire with food styling projects pouring in from every possible media in the town..television media, magazines, packaging and You tube channels.

After a lot of filtering, here are some candid shots from the photo shoot which I accepted & executed for various medias in Chennai some time back.

Everyone wants to live on top of the mountain, but all the happiness and growth occurs while you’re climbing it.” ~ Andy Rooney.

I am enjoying my journey as a food stylist and was in for a pleasant surprise the other day when I received a call from the ace photographer Venkat Ram.

The photo-shoot was for a popular South Indian brand, Hatsun with a good network in dairy products. The photo-shoot was for their new venture into ready-to-eat frozen food product line by the name Oyalo.

Recipe | Healthy Cornmeal Squares aka Raab ki Chakki – Appreciating small things in life

“We tend to forget that happiness doesn’t come as a result of getting something we don’t have, but rather of recognizing and appreciating what we do have.” ~ Frederick Keonig

Sitting around the bonfire, sipping creamy and delicious Makki ki Raab in small sakora or earthenware pot, is one of the sweetest memories from my occasional winter visits to our family home in Bhilwara, Rajasthan.

Granny  would light the ‘chulha’ or hearth made from a mixture of cow dung and clay as early as 4 am in the morning. The indigenous chulha provided much needed warmth during the chilly winter days.

Recipe & Food Styling | Steamed rice dumplings aka Kozhukattai – Happiness is a choice that requires effort at times

Amma, could you believe that I made close to 140 perfect looking Kozhukattais (steamed rice dumplings) yesterday for the shoot… Iniya  the actress who acted in the commercial, rushed towards me after the shoot and asked if she could take a few of those brown coloured yummy Kozhukattais  home.” I paused for a while sipping the strong & frothy filter coffee and stretched my legs to sit comfortably on the large wooden swing in my mother-in-law’s living room.

A Brownie that sizzled – There are some surprises, we are better off without them

Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts.” ~ Churchill

I don’t really like surprises, not the bad and big ones anyway. Whether in life or in my kitchen at home, I expect things to happen just the way they always have.

Hmm..if only wishes were horses…

The fact of the matter is that nothing is ever certain and life gives you strange surprise when you least expect from it.
