Colorful Coins – Rice & Lentil Pancakes for Kids
The lunch options I select for my kids are very simple & easy to cook, keeping their daily recommended doses of nutrition always. Rest assured I get empty lunch-boxes and a satisfied kid each day from the school.
Idea for the colourful coins stemmed up from my 5 years old daughter, a very fussy & slow eater. She asked me to pack lunches not more than a coin’ size ! That is when I started reducing every possible food to the size of a coin. Colourful coin is one such attempt. Though small in size, it is power packed with nutrients and energy to keep the kids going for long during the rigorous school hours. The coins add up as great party starters too.
Basic Coins
Ingredients:
- 3 tbsp. Boiled rice (a variety of rice)
- 1 tbsp urad dal (black gram)
- 1 tsp. Fenugreek seeds
- A pinch of salt
- 1/2 cup water
- Oil for shallow frying
Method:Wash and soak the rice, dal and fenugreek seeds for 2 hours. Grind all the ingredients together to a fine paste. Add salt and keep it aside for 8-10 hours to let it ferment. The batter for basic coins Is ready for use. Can be stored in refrigerator for 4-5 days.
Heat a griddle (tawa) and pour a batter to the size of a coin and sprinkle oil. Fry both the sides till light brown in colour. Basic coin is ready to be used with the variations of your choice.
A few Variations;
Spreads: Use squeezy jams tubes, sauces to make smiley face and animal figures. Cheese cubes, peanut butter, honey, mayonnaise and fruit syrup can be used as spreads.
Veggie Coins: vegetables such as carrots, cabbage, potato and beans can be grated and cooked to make a delicious spread. Include coloured capsicum, red cabbage, shelled peas and sweet corn kernels to make it more interesting and healthy as well.

Nice to know that you are trying your hands on different dishes to please your kids. Yes kids need variety and innovation when it comes to food, else they get bored very soon. Try to make fun food for them, even dosas can be innovated and make kid friendly. Similarly chapattis can be given makeover.
Keep trying and inventing, its fun.

you say boiled rice for the batter, any variety? The instructions just say wash and soak the rice though, which I would think you would do with uncooked rice. Do you use uncooked or cooked?
@Emma, The rice mentioned here is uncooked rice. We get two varieties here, one is raw rice and the other is boiled rice. The rice with the bran is boiled for some time to retain the nutrition before removing the outer layer, and we get slightly pale color grain (boiled rice). This rice is not milled again. While the raw rice is milled to remove the husk and the outer bran to get the white color grain.
i only have the milled (boiled rice), is it still the same ratio?
