Legumes Made Easy – Quick Pigeon peas or Toor Dal recipe

Pigeon peas or Toor dal as called in India is a very Common household pulse used in daily meals. This quick pigeon peas recipe is the most basic and quick to make, with all the nutrients of legumes intact.


(makes for 2 servings)

  • 1 cup Pigeon peas or Toor dal
  • 1 onion
  • 1 tomato
  • ginger-garlic paste (optional)
  • 1 tsp chilly powder
  • 1/2 tsp Turmeric powder
  • 1 tsp coriander powder
  • 1/2 tsp cumin seed powder (optional)
  • A pinch of asafoetida or Hing
  • salt as desired
  • 1 tsp mustard seeds
  • 2 tsp oil
  • 2 cups of water

Method: Wash the pulses in running water and soak it in clean water till you assemble all the ingredients for cooking. Peel and slice the onion in fine pieces. Discard the tomato seeds and dice it finely. Grate a small piece of ginger and crush 2 cloves of garlic.

Heat oil in a kadai and add the mustard seeds in it, let it splutter. Add sliced onion and the ginger-garlic paste, fry it for a minute. Add diced tomatoes and all the dry ingredients in the kadai. Fry for another minute.  Add the soaked pulses and 2 cups of water in it. Cook till the dal is soft.


Pressure cooker will reduce the time of cooking drastically. The pulses are ready in just 5-7 minutes in a pressure cooker at high pressure.

Serve hot with chapattis or as an accompaniment to any rice dish and pack a healthy lunchbox.
