Health | Black Rice – Add This Rare, Tasty and Healthy Grain in Your Diet

“Madam these are a special variety of sticky rice, quite popular in Thai cuisine and cost almost 4 times more than normal rice.” Replied the salesman hurriedly, after seeing a perplexed look on my face holding a small bag of Black rice. This rare and aromatic sweet rice is not a very common site in many Indian stores.

Black rice was once called as ‘The forbidden rice‘ in ancient China and it was reserved only for the emperor and the nobles and was forbidden for the common man. As they believed that the rice has special properties and helps in longevity and is aphrodisiac in nature. This tasty and healthy sticky rice is extensively used in many Asian countries due to the myriads of health benefits associated with it.

Do you follow any particular recipe for making pilaf/pulav? I am afraid I don’t… If there is ample time and the cooking is for some special guests, my Pilaf will have a mix of home ground spices and some exotic ingredients such as poppy seeds, coconut & cashew paste. On a normal day it’s just a few whole spices, veggies, fluffy Basmati rice and my quick aromatic pilaf. And how versatile & flexible a recipe could get, you don’t need to follow any particular recipe and yet come out with some extraordinary results, yes such is the magic of Pilaf!

My favorite is always this simple and quick Pilaf or Pulav recipe, wherein the subtle flavors of Basmati rice, a mild punch of few whole spices and the real taste of fresh veggies could be enjoyed in best form.

Party Menu – Refreshing Yogurt Rice

Yogurt rice is the most relishing recipe I discovered after coming to South India. Till then curd was just a tall glass of Lassie or a delicate dessert Srikhand. Only after getting married I did come to know that the humble Curd can also be transformed into a very delicious and healthy meal! And like my hubby for many people down here, no meal is complete without a small ladle of creamy curd rice. Quite easy to make this refreshing dish adorns many a lunchboxes of office goers and school kids.

Brown Rice or White Rice

A staple food for the major parts of the world’s population – Rice is one of the most popular and ancient grain available to mankind. And people of many underdeveloped countries are surviving only on rice, eating the same for all the three meals!

A life giving and wonder grain Rice has undergone many changes since early man discovered it. There are now numerous varieties of rice available in the market.

White rice, yellow rice, round rice, sticky rice, brown rice, Basmati rice and even green rice is there in some places.

But not all the rice get and cook are healthy. Milling and processing have taken away all the nutrients with it, leaving us rice with empty calories, devoid of many essential nutrients.
