Recipe & Food Styling | Two Healthy Energy Ladoos and a trail of memories..

“What keeps me motivated is not the food itself but all the bonds and memories the food represents.” ~ M.Chiarello

Running around with cousins from one terrace to another, attending family weddings and eating simple home cooked food on wood fire…childhood was so much fun at granny’s home.

Summer vacations were always welcomed, when extended families and cousins would all come over to our large joint family house for holidays in Bhilwara, Rajasthan.

Recipes | Sugar Free Date Rolls and Millet Churma Ladoos – The Power of Food to Bring Back Good Memories

Various legends associated to the origin of a festival in India leads to different rituals people follow to celebrate it which keeps the ‘amusement quotient’ quite high.
I received a call from the office of a very popular regional magazine  Dinakaran, sometime back. The editor informed  me that they are planning to feature 7-8 celebrities from various fields in Chennai with a traditional sweet recipe from their respective states in their special Diwali issue. And I am one among them.

What“!? I almost screamed…err..huh…did I hear it right?

Recipes | Two Healthy Festive Treats – Cherishing all the Happy Moments

Here is your copy from editors’ desk” said the delivery man and handed over the parcel to me. My heart started pounding faster and my fingers flipped the pages recklessly. “Relax mom, your articles will be there in it” son understood my eagerness and took the magazine from my hand.

Whoosh…a small booklet slipped from inside the magazine and fell on the ground. My eyes popped out to see my picture there.

Hmm…the thrill of seeing yourself in print ….the best adrenaline rush you could ever get I suppose.

Well, adrenaline rush or not, this assignment did make my diet graph plunge into a nose-dive. Yes, I am struggling to ward off those calories I gained after each recipe was done with 🙂

Recipe | Easy Nutty Chocolate Truffles with Digestive Biscuits – Simple Pleasures of Life…

All good things in life are simple and I feel that it is our expectations and desire to get more from it makes it complex. The junk food addiction, chopping down trees endlessly to make paper marooning animals of their habitats, plastic menace….we are moving from simple ways of living to the more complex world. And to think of it, the idea of wrapping around leaves and eating apples straight from the tree as done by our ancestors could solve many a problems of modern day living 😉

A fresh fruit in its natural form is my kind of dessert any day and given a choice I would love to serve a plate of fresh fruits to my guests as well to end a meal. “This is not a dessert we will expect from the author of a food blog” is the answer to my query from my guests most of the time.

Peanut Butter Fudge with Nuts & Caramel Topping

A sweet indulgence – making Fudge is very common during festivals and many religious ceremonies in India. Though Wiki defines it as a western confectionery, for me a fudge is what completes any Indian festivity as long as I remember. From the humble melt-in-mouth Besan ki chakki (chickpea flour fudge) to the more exotic Kaju Katlis (cashew fudge) Indian festivals are incomplete without these goodies. With loads of sugar, butter and milk to go into making these fudge, these goodies are truly a sinful indulgence!

Peanut butter fudge is high on calories but if eaten in moderation it could provide all the health benefits attached with peanuts in your diet. These Nutty Peanut butter Fudges are highly addictive and a word of caution is to keep a tab on the number of times you open your refrigerator 🙂

Truffles – A Few Healthy & Easy Dessert Recipes

Chocolate, cream and nuts go hand in hand to make this soft and rich dessert Truffles which are an epitome of indulgence. Traditionally Truffles are made with loads of chocolate and heavy cream which makes it a melt-in-mouth treat. I have tried that version also but did not like it much, as the buttery and rich taste could not gel well with my palate. The Truffles I often make has plenty of nuts, dried fruits and digestive biscuits in it. Cocoa powder and the drinking chocolate somewhat stimulate the original recipe which demands cream & chocolate in it.

These Truffle versions may not exactly taste like the real ones but then they are definitely a step ahead of their counterparts in terms of nutrition and I don’t need to keep a count upon them 🙂

Exotic Sweet and Healthy too – A Cottage Cheese Delight

“What !! Exotic and healthy sweet, are you nuts!” is the reaction from a friend with sweet tooth. More often we associate exotic foods with recipes which are rich, takes time to prepare and need loads of work outs on Treadmill to shed those extra calories & kilos they add to the unwanted areas 🙁

Be it Malai Koftas, Ras Malai or an irresistible Black forest cake, they all bring in the same feeling of sheer indulgence. Nutty Delights are exotic and healthy at the same time since it is made with cottage cheese and nuts. But you must keep a watch on the numbers 🙂

A Date with Sunflower Seeds – Baked Healthy Ladoos

Come festival season and all the shops get decked up in new attire, lighting, posters and various gimmicks to attract customers. The most active participants during this time are the sweet sellers. The colorful and attractive array of sweets in the shops are tempting enough to give a try.

Most of the sweets in the shops may not confer to the quality of the ingredients used in it, due to the mere quantity and demand of such goodies. For the same reason I wanted to give a slight healthy twist to this traditional sweet recipe which is almost synonym to Rajasthan.

Churma Laddoo is an integral part of welcoming any guest in Rajasthan. I bake the wholewheat flour balls instead of the normal practice of deep frying them in ghee.
