A Healthy & Crispy Soya Potato Snack
Patties or Tikia is a regular feature in my home on Sunday evenings. I include different vegetables, greens and other ingredients to give variety every time I make the same. I love this snack for the fact that it is quite filling, healthy and delicious and can be enjoyed at any time of the year.
I often pack this in my kids lunchbox with tomato sauce, they just love to eat it in school. And there are times when I pack 20-30 tikias in their lunchbox on popular demand of their friends.
The last time I posted a simple potato tikia in my other blog, I received mails from friends asking to give step by step presentation of the same. As they were finding it difficult to make it.
This crispy soya potato snack is dedicated to Raji and Anandhi who never forget to send sweet comments after trying out my recipes. Hope you find this post useful.
Ingredients: (makes 4 tikias)
- 2 Potatoes
- 1 tbsp Soya granules
- 4 bread slices
- 1 small onion
- 1 green chilly
- 1 tbsp fresh coriander leaves
- 1 tbsp Mint leaves
- 1/2 tsp Cumin seed powder
- 1/4 tsp turmeric
- 1/4 tsp Garam Masala
- Salt as desired
- 2 tsp oil
- 1/4 tsp Amchoor powder or Chaat masala
- water
Method: Boil and peel the potatoes. Peel the onion and slice it finely.
Soak the soya granules in water for 5 minutes and take out. Squeeze the granules to remove excess water from it.
Mix sliced onion, green chilly, green leaves and all the dry powders with potato and add soya granules to it. Mix the ingredients thoroughly, and keep aside.
Take a big bowl and fill it with water. Now take a slice of bread and dip it in water for a second, squeeze lightly keeping the slice in between both the palms. Place a small quantity of potato mixture in the center of the bread.
Note: This part is real tricky. If you want to deep fry the tikias, fill it with little of potato mixture, and if you prefer to shallow fry the tikia, fill more of potato mix. Fold the bread slice around the potato mixture and close the tikia. Close it tightly by circulating it in between the palm.
For the first timers it is best advised to fill less of the mixture in the bread slice. As the tikia will be easy to manage, close properly and may not open while frying in the oil.
Make all the tikias and keep aside. Heat a non stick girdle and sprinkle a little oil on it. Keep all the tikias on the girdle (tawa) and shallow fry with very little oil. Take off when it is golden brown in colour.
Serve hot with tomato sauce or fresh coriander chutney. Pack it in the lunchbox or take it as a picnic take away.
Soya granules with potato makes it a healthy option for kids and elders as well. And mint in the tikia gives it a very distinct taste besides adding the nutritive value of the recipe.
Though the deep fried version taste heavenly, but then this place is all for ‘lite recipes for right health!’
Hope the explanation and pictures make it easy for you to try this crispy potato soya snack. Do let me know how did it come.

Delicious and crispy looking tikkis Sangeeta!!
hey!!..i love tikkis but whenever i try making them with the bread it turns out bad. When i dip the bread in water and squeeze it, it disintegrates and there is total mayhem..the tikkis also tended to absorb a lot of oil during frying..have switched to breadcrumbs and beaten egg instead..any tips on how to accomplish the bread cover well??thanks!
You need to dip the bread for a second, and not soak in water for some time. Just dip and take it out instantly. The bread should be almost dry from inside, with a thin layer of water outside.
Yes, you can always shallow fro the tikkis, with 1-2 tsp of oil. The taste may not be as good as the fried one, but than you need to sacrifice something (oil) for good health!
Hope this time the Tikkis come out well.
Best wishes.
i like the way u present the recepie.i’ll surely try this and let u know. Thanks for ur wonderful recepies.
Sanjeeta…these potato soy patties may be a little more complex to make…however, I’m sure they’re absolutely worth the time.
I’ll bookmark it for when my time is a little less restrictive ;o)
Ciao for now and flavourful wishes,
Claudia
Hi,
I have read few of your recipes, all are mouth watering and healthy.I will going to make some of them and will regularly check this for new recipes.USP is that presentation is very well given with coulurful pictures and easy explained notes.
Just loving it.
keep it up.
Trripti.
I usually put the potatoes mixture between 2 bread slices and spray water in a spray bottle and roll it with a rolling pin. Place them on a plate and in the frig for 15 minutes. this will help smooth the edges and dry to shallow fry in a non stick skillet. and take it before it turns brown/ drain it off and place in the oven for 5 minutes to be crispy. No matter what way you make this, it is a challenge. Need to have time/ patience for this recipe
nice one I am going to try this tomorrow and let u know the result
Hi!
Very informative site…and grt clicks..love this recipe and o it right in the first go..hit with the kids..served it with mint chutney and tangy tamarind chutney..
The only change I mad was to delete the soya, onions and greenchillies!! and instead added fresh moong sprouts and a tspn of mint chutney and added these to the potato mix filling instead….YUMMY!!
